Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 18, 2026 · See also the Terms of Use and the Copyright Policy
La Familia Promotions (“Company”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) operates Gia, the website at gia.vote. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting it through our compliance with this policy. This policy describes how we collect, process, retain, and disclose personal data about you when you use gia.vote and the services on it that link to this policy (our “Services”), and our practices for using, maintaining, protecting, and disclosing that information.
The short version. You can use most of Gia without an account and without giving us any personal data. Gia shows no ads. We do not sell your personal data, we do not share it for advertising, and we do not share it with political campaigns, parties, or data brokers.
This policy applies only to information we collect:
- Through the Services.
- In communications, including email, between you and the Services (for example, sign-in codes, reminder emails, and messages you send to our support address).
It does not apply to information collected by:
- Us offline or through any other means, including on any other website operated by Company or any third party that does not link to this policy; or
- Any third party, including through any website or content that may link to or be accessible from the Services (such as an official’s website, a news article, or an elections office). When you use Gia to contact an official, your message goes from your own email app or the official’s own form, under that service’s privacy terms.
Please read this policy carefully to understand our policies and practices regarding your information and how we treat it. By using our Services or providing us with your information, you agree to the collection, use, and sharing of your information as described in this privacy policy. This policy may change from time to time (see Changes to Our Privacy Policy). Your continued use of the Services after we make changes as described here is deemed to be acceptance of those changes, so please check the policy periodically for updates.
Children’s and Teens’ Data
You must be at least 13 years old to create a Gia account, and we ask for your year of birth to check. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal data from a child under 13, we will delete it and close the account. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal data, please contact us at privacy@gia.vote.
Members aged 13 to 17 can use Gia’s community features with extra protections:
- Every comment a member under 18 writes is reviewed by a person before anyone else sees it.
- A yard sign photo sent by a member under 18 is credited to “a Gia member”, never to their username.
- We build no political profile of anyone under 18: no record of the pages they open, no recommendations, no echo chamber score, and no member scores. Members under 18 are never shown on anyone’s Orbit.
- Their year of birth and street address are never shown to anyone.
We encourage teens to talk with a parent or guardian before sharing anything personal in a comment. A parent or guardian may contact us at the address below to ask about, or to delete, a teen’s account.
The Personal Data That We Collect or Process
“Personal data” is information that identifies, relates to, or describes, directly or indirectly, you as an individual, such as your name, email address, telephone number, or home address.
Most of Gia (its pages about officials, positions, bills, ballot measures, maps, news, the voter guide, lessons, and games) needs no account and no personal data. The types and categories of personal data we collect or process include:
- Account and contact information. When you create an account: your email address, the name and username you choose, an optional bio, and your year of birth. If you sign in with Google, Google gives us your email address and name; we never see your Google password.
- Location information. The area you choose (such as a city or county) and, only if you choose to save it, your street address, which we use to show your ballot and who represents you. Your street address is never shown to anyone. We do not collect precise location from your device.
- Your activity on Gia (members). Your ratings (for example, whether you support or oppose a bill or ballot measure; whether you trust or like an official, think they are clean or corrupt, or think they are doing a good job; and who you think will win a race and who you want to win), the officials you star as favorites, who you follow and who follows you, and, if you are 18 or older and have not turned it off, the pages of officials, positions, bills, and measures you open while signed in.
- Content you post. Comments and replies, reports of comments, your profile, and photos of campaign yard signs you send us.
- Email reminder sign-ups. If you ask for reminders of election dates or public meetings (with or without an account), your email address, the topics you choose, and your area.
- Communications. Messages you send to us, such as support requests and appeals.
- Device information. Your IP address, browser type, device type, and similar information sent by your browser.
Information about your political views. Your ratings, favorites, and stances, and the pages you open, can reveal your political views, and some laws treat this as sensitive. We use it only to provide the features described in this policy, which you choose to use; we never sell it, never use it for advertising, and never share it with campaigns or parties; and you can see, download, or delete it at any time (see Your Rights and Choices About Your Information). We build no political profile of anyone under 18.
We do not collect payment information, government identification numbers, biometric information, or precise geolocation.
We also collect:
- Statistics or aggregated information. Statistical or aggregated data does not directly identify a specific person, but we may derive it from personal data. For example, we show totals such as “62% of Gia members here trust them”. These totals appear only once at least 10 members have rated, so that no one’s answer can be worked out.
- Technical information. Information about your internet connection and how you use the Services, such as the pages you visit, the date and time, page response times, and errors, which our hosting provider records for security and to keep the Services working.
If we combine or connect non-personal statistical or technical data with personal data so that it directly or indirectly identifies an individual, we treat the combined information as personal data.
How We Collect Your Personal and Other Data
You Provide Information to Us
We collect information about you when you interact with our Services, such as when you create or update an account, rate officials, bills, or measures, star a favorite, follow another member, post or report a comment, send a yard sign photo, save your area or address, sign up for reminders, or email us. Before you sign in, your ratings, favorites, and voter guide picks are kept only in your own browser; when you sign in, Gia uploads them to your account.
When you send a yard sign photo, Gia shrinks it and removes its location and camera details on your device before it is sent, and removes any that remain when it arrives.
Automatically Through Our Services
As you use the Services, our hosting provider automatically receives technical information such as your IP address, browser type, the pages you request, and the date and time. We use it for security, to prevent abuse, and to fix problems, and keep it for no longer than 30 days. To limit how much each visitor can use Gia’s search bar and Listen mode each day, we count uses by a scrambled (hashed) form of your IP address, which is deleted within two days.
We do not use automatic collection technologies to track your activities over time and across other websites (behavioral tracking).
The technologies we use for this automatic data collection include:
- Cookies. A cookie is a small file placed on your device. Gia uses only the cookies it needs to work: one that keeps you signed in, and a short-lived one used while you sign in with Google. Gia uses no advertising or analytics cookies. You may refuse or disable cookies in your browser’s settings, but you will then be unable to sign in.
- Your browser’s storage. Gia saves your preferences in your own browser (such as your area, display settings, favorites, ratings, and voter guide picks before you sign in). This stays on your device; you can clear it in your browser’s settings.
Gia does not use web beacons, advertising networks, or third-party analytics. Our emails contain no tracking pixels.
When you use certain features, your browser connects directly to a service that provides them, which receives your IP address and the request:
- Map tiles for Gia’s maps come from OpenFreeMap.
- Address lookups go to the U.S. Census Bureau’s geocoder, which receives the address you type to find your districts. Gia does not keep the address unless you save it.
We do not control these services’ use of the information they receive. Your internet or mobile service provider and your device maker may also collect information about your use of the internet under their own policies.
From Service Providers
If you choose “Continue with Google”, Google tells us your email address and name so that we can sign you in. We do not otherwise receive personal data about you from other sources, and we do not buy personal data.
How We Use Your Information
We use information that we collect about you or that you provide to us, including any personal data, to:
- Provide you with the Services and any contents, features, and information that we make available through them, including your profile, your feed, your voter guide, and showing your ballot and who represents you.
- Show members’ totals, such as how many members trust an official, once at least 10 members have rated.
- Keep the Services safe: check comments and photos before others see them, prevent spam and abuse, handle reports, and enforce our Terms of Use.
- Place members on the members’ Orbit (adults only). We work out internal scores for each member 18 or older (where they lean from left to right, how active they are, and how many people follow them) from their ratings, favorites, and activity. These scores are never shown as numbers to anyone, including you; they only decide where circles sit. Your friends on Gia (members you follow who follow you back) see your circle on their Orbit, placed by where your score says you lean, unless you turn off “Show me on my friends’ Orbit” in Settings.
- Recommend officials and issues, and work out your echo chamber score (adults only). We recommend officials and issues, including ones from viewpoints other than yours, from your ratings, favorites, stances, who you follow, and, unless you turn it off, the pages you open. Your echo chamber score is how much your friends on Gia agree with you; it appears only once at least 5 friends can be compared, never says which friends agree with you, and is shown only to you unless you make it public.
- Send you the emails you ask for: sign-in codes, account notices (such as when a moderator removes something you posted, and why), and reminders you sign up for.
- Respond to your requests and messages.
- Improve our Services and fix problems, using aggregated or technical information.
- Carry out our obligations and enforce our rights, including under our Terms of Use.
- Fulfill any other purpose for which you provide it, in any other way we describe when you provide the information, or for any other purpose with your consent.
Some features work without sending your personal data anywhere. For example, “You” on Orbit and how well an official matches you are worked out in your own browser from your stars and ratings, and are shown only to you.
We do not use your information to market other companies’ products or services to you, and we send no marketing email unless you ask for it.
Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Model Training Disclosure
Gia uses an AI service, Claude by Anthropic, to answer questions typed into Gia’s search bar from Gia’s own information, and to check comments and yard sign photos against our community rules before a moderator reviews them. We send Anthropic only the question, comment, or photo being handled, never your email address, street address, or account details. Under Anthropic’s commercial terms, Anthropic does not use this data to train its models.
We do not collect, use, or sell personal data for the purpose of training large language models.
Who We Disclose Your Information To
We may disclose aggregated information about our users, and information that does not identify any individual, without restriction.
Some of what you post is public by design: your name and username, comments you post (once approved), your follower and following counts, and yard sign photos you send (once approved, credited to your username, or to “a Gia member” if you are under 18). Your favorites, your stances on bills and measures, your individual ratings, and your echo chamber score are private unless you choose to show them on your profile.
We may also disclose personal data that we collect or you provide as described in this privacy policy:
- To service providers who run parts of the Services for us, only as much as each needs, and who are bound to keep it confidential and use it only to provide their services to us: Cloudflare (hosting, account and photo storage, and sending email), Google (sign-in with Google, and our support email), Anthropic (question answering and content checks, as described above), and ElevenLabs (reading page text aloud in Listen mode; we send it only the text of the page).
- To a buyer or other successor in the event of a merger, divestiture, restructuring, reorganization, dissolution, or other sale or transfer of some or all of Company’s assets, whether as a going concern or as part of bankruptcy, liquidation, or similar proceeding, in which personal data held by Company is among the assets transferred. Any successor must keep the promises in this policy.
- To fulfill the purpose for which you provide it, for any other purpose disclosed by us when you provide the information, or with your consent.
We may also disclose your personal data:
- To comply with any court order, law, or legal process, including to respond to any government or regulatory request.
- To enforce or apply our Terms of Use and other agreements.
- If we believe disclosure is necessary or appropriate to protect the rights, property, or safety of our organization, our members, or others.
We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing, for targeted advertising, or with political campaigns, parties, or data brokers.
The categories of personal data we may disclose for the purposes above include account and contact information, content and information you post or provide to us, and device information.
Your Rights and Choices About Your Information
This section describes mechanisms you can use to control certain uses and disclosures of your information and rights you may have under state law, depending on where you live.
- In Settings, you can see and change your profile, your privacy choices (what your profile shows, and whether you appear on your friends’ Orbit), your area, and your saved address; turn off or clear the record of pages you open; download a copy of your account data; and delete your account. You can delete any comment you posted at any time.
- Deleting your account removes your profile, ratings, comments, photos, follows, favorites, viewing history, and scores within 30 days; backups are erased within a further 30 days.
- Reminder emails. Every reminder has a one-click unsubscribe link.
- Cookies and browser storage. You can set your browser to refuse cookies or to clear its storage. If you refuse cookies, you will not be able to sign in. Some browsers include a “Do Not Track” setting; because Gia does not track you across websites, there is nothing further for it to turn off.
- Location. Gia does not use your device’s location. You choose your area, and saving a street address is optional.
Your State Privacy Rights
Depending on your state of residency (including under the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act), you may have certain rights related to your personal data, including:
- Access and Data Portability. You may confirm whether we process your personal data and access a copy of the personal data we process. Members can download their data in a portable format from Settings.
- Correction. You may request that we correct inaccuracies in your personal data that we maintain, taking into account the information’s nature and processing purpose.
- Deletion. You may request that we delete personal data about you that we maintain, subject to certain exceptions under applicable law.
- Opt Out of Sales, Targeted Advertising, and Profiling. We do not sell personal data or use it for targeted advertising, and we do not use it to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you. You can turn off recording of the pages you open, which we use for recommendations, in Settings.
Important: The exact scope of these rights varies by state. There are also several exceptions where we may not have an obligation to fulfill your request. We extend these rights to all of our users, whatever state they live in.
To exercise any of these rights, use Settings or email us at privacy@gia.vote. We may need to confirm your identity before we act on a request, and we will respond within 45 days. If we decline to take action on your request, you may appeal by replying to our response with the subject line “Appeal”; we will respond to your appeal within 60 days. If you are not satisfied with the result of an appeal, you may contact your state attorney general.
Some browsers and browser extensions support the Global Privacy Control (“GPC”) that can send a signal to opt out of certain types of data processing, including data “sales” as defined under certain laws. Because we do not sell personal data or use it for targeted advertising, we already treat every visitor as having opted out.
How We Protect Your Personal Data
We use commercially reasonable administrative, physical, and technical measures designed to protect your personal data from accidental loss or destruction and from unauthorized access, use, alteration, and disclosure. For example, Gia keeps no passwords (you sign in with a one-time code sent to your email, or with Google), the site is served only over encrypted connections, and only a scrambled (hashed) form of your sign-in session is stored. However, no website, system, electronic storage, or online service is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of your personal data transmitted to, through, or in connection with the Services. In particular, email sent to or from the Services may not be secure, and you should carefully decide what information you send to us that way.
The safety and security of your information also depends on you. Keep access to your email account (and your Google account, if you use it to sign in) secure, and don’t share personal details in public comments.
How We Retain Your Personal Data
We keep the categories of personal data described in this policy for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfill the purposes described or as otherwise legally permitted or required, such as maintaining the Services, complying with our legal obligations, resolving disputes, and for safety, security, and fraud prevention. In particular:
- Account data is kept until you delete it or your account, and is then deleted within 30 days (and from backups within a further 30 days).
- The record of pages you open is kept for 90 days.
- Comments and photos removed by a moderator are kept for 90 days (so that removals can be appealed), then deleted.
- Technical information about visits is kept for no longer than 30 days.
- Reminder sign-ups are kept until you unsubscribe; an unconfirmed sign-up is deleted after 48 hours.
At the end of the retention period, personal data will be deleted, destroyed, or deidentified.
Changes to Our Privacy Policy
We may update this policy from time to time, and we will provide notice of any such changes to the policy as required by law. The date the privacy policy was last updated is identified at the top of the page. We will notify you of changes to this policy by updating the “last updated” date and posting the updated policy on the Services. If a change materially affects how we use personal data members have already given us, we will tell members by email or on the site before it takes effect.
